We all know that the SVU cafeteria this year has been a topic of controversy. However, I believe that the food has been on the up and up the past few weeks. So I wanted to review it and let you know what I thought of the food at the cafe this last week.

OK, I’m not claiming to be a great food critic, and I’m definitely not a picky eater, so my ideas of good food might be a little different than other people’s. But despite all of that, I do believe I know what good food is, and can honestly say when something is bad or not.

Tuesday Lunch

  • Beef kafta — 9.5/10

Curryish?? Tender, great seasoning.

  • Carrot — 7/10

Definitely needed some salt, but well cooked.

  • Green Bean — 4/10

Overcooked and a little mushy.

  • Potatoes — 9/10

Could have been a little bit softer, but overall fire. Good seasoning.

  • Pita chip — 5/10

Dry and inconsistently crunchy.

They were out of apple juice again…. so DP it is.

Tuesday Dinner

  • Squash & Zucchini — 5/10

Way too much pepper.

  • Fries — 3/10

Stale and old. Probably sat in the container way too long. Decent flavor.

  • Potatoes — 6/10

Again, probably sat out a little long, so they were tough and dry. Good flavor. Not too much pepper.

  • Brussel sprouts — 1/10

Dry and super bitter, like they weren’t ready to be cooked or they got cooked the wrong way.

  • Chicken — 7/10

Honestly, the only good thing about this meal. Good flavor and wasn’t dry at all. I think it has rosemary?

Overall tonight? Mid, but not inedible. I think it was just left out for a bit too long, so it all got dry.

Wednesday Lunch

  • Egg Roll — 7/10

Outside didn’t have the crunch I wanted, but overall, fire taste.

  • Rice — 3/10

Mushy as frick.

  • Cauliflower — 5/10

Way too overcooked, like soggy almost.

  • Chicken 8/10

Solid. I liked the teriyaki a lot.

  • Fries 8.5/10

Not as fresh as I wanted but great seasoning.

Overall, portions were terrible, but food wasn’t too bad. I couldn’t bring myself to try the mac and cheese pizza that they had as an option.

Wednesday Dinner

  • Sandwich

As always the sandwiches here never fail to disappoint. Even after sitting for about 2 hours (I had to buy it before practice) it was still good. Bread wasn’t soggy, chipotle ranch sauce was fire.

  • Chips

This is not an opinion, spicy sweet chili doritos are the best kind of doritos no matter what.

  • Cookie

Consistently the best food on campus, especially the chunky cookie.

Thursday Lunch

  • Sausage 6.5/10

Meat was good, but the casing was much too thick. Also would have been way better with a little char on the sides. Tasted like they just boiled it

  • Fries 7/10

Nice and crispy, but didn’t have any seasoning

  • Zucchini veges 6/10

Made too oily, but decent flavoring and spices

Friday lunch

  • Fries 6/10

Not super crispy like I like, but they weren’t bad and had some salt this time

  • Carrot, broccoli, peas 6.5/10

Peas and carrots were actually pretty good, but the broccoli was very mid

  • Tandoori Chicken 8/10

Chicken was kinda dry, but whatever tandoori was tasted so freaking good

Overall, I believe the main proteins for each of these meals was really good, but the sides were hardly ever fantastic. Good maybe, but not fantastic. However, my biggest takeaway from eating at the cafe is the portion sizes. They give you barely enough food for a child.

So, if you want to get enough food for yourself you either have to go back up to the line at least four times, or get a plate of the main protein, and pizza, and salad, and everything else they have to offer.
