Music is very prominent in everyone’s life! In the heart of our beautiful campus, there exists a unique tradition that beautifully combines spirituality with music. Every Sunday evening, students and community members have the chance to gather on the hill to participate in what is known as “Hymns on the Hill.” This is a powerful testament to the idea that music has the ability to inspire, uplift, and create a profound connection.

Main Hall serves as a perfect backdrop for this special tradition. Participants are enveloped in an atmosphere of serenity and tranquility. The elevated point offers a stunning view of the surrounding area, enhancing the overall experience and setting the stage for a spiritual connection through music. Julia Evans is helping provide this opportunity each week. “Once it gets going it’s hard to stop it. So many people want an extra opportunity to sing hymns and feel like part of a community, and I think this is an important legacy for Southern Virginia. Hopefully we can keep up the energy and joy for it!”

Hymns hold a unique place in the hearts of the Latter-day Saint community. The lyrics, composed with depth and emotion, often address themes of faith, love, and connection with the Holy Ghost. Singing these hymns brings together students of all backgrounds, ethnicities, and even religions (you don’t need to be LDS to feel the spirit or sing songs praising our Lord). This is creating an environment where our faiths and spirituality can be shared and celebrated among all! When asked if this was just for members of the church Julia said “Nope! I have a few friends that like to sing, who have come several times just because it’s a fun experience. If you’re interested in making noise, and don’t mind singing hymns then this is the place for you!”

The power that music has on our world today is undeniable. It has transcended cultures, ages, and groups. Music is listened to daily and is used in a way to express oneself. Music speaks to everyone in different ways, but when it comes to hymns, this connection can be particularly profound. The meaning behind each song, the powerful harmonies, and the lyrics provide an undeniable bridge to the spiritual world, allowing us to express our devotion, gratitude, and worship. This is a chance for us to come together, support one another, and strengthen our faith. It is a great start to the week, bringing a sense of peace in our hearts while living in a world full of chaos.

“I love the opportunity to choose hymns as a group that are special or applicable to each of us for that special day. It kind of feels like the words are more meaningful because everyone is so engaged with what they are singing” — Julia Evans

Now, Hymns on the Hill is not just a Sunday gathering; it’s again a testament to the enduring power of music and the strength within our community. “If you find yourself wanting to sing some hymns you love in a really chill environment then just show up sometime!” As SVU students and community members create a space where the spirit can be felt, regardless of who you are, what you may be going through, or what you personally believe. It’s a time where you can put your differences aside and find the similarities of wanting to grow closer to Christ, and feel the spirit through a sense of peace in music. I hope to see each of your smiling faces this next Sunday as we can all come together to learn from one another and help each of our testimonies in Christ grow!
