The Southern Virginia Women’s Basketball team has been performing exceptionally during their season with an incredible record of 16–2, including a 15 win streak. They currently hold the #1 spot in the Capital Athletic Conference rankings.

Alexus Barnes, ’19, Forward/ Shooting Guard, said of the season, “It feels really good to be number one in the conference. We worked so hard for this every single day in practice, and just to see all our hard work finally pay off feels great.”

The Women’s Basketball team has had a phenomenal season this year, winning nearly every game played. With a winning streak of 15 games under their belts, Knights fans excitedly crowd into the Arena each home game to watch them play. Adam Wardenburg, head coach of the Women’s Basketball team at Southern Virginia since July of 2018, attributes this win streak to working daily on being better than they were yesterday. Wardenburg says they are focusing on, “believing we can be a championship team, and taking it one day at a time.”

In terms of logistical changes, the team has been working on building a strong defense as their basis and strengthening their offense from there. Wardenburg states that his goal is to make this a championship team, and to work on being a “champion every day.”

Katie Garrish, ’21, Center, says, “There is always stuff to improve on. For us, we just need to clean up more on offense, making sure we are playing SVU basketball all the time and not rushing our plays. When we rush, we make silly mistakes and turnovers. We are playing very well this year, and every practice we are improving.”
