During the semester, there will be times when you don’t know how to entertain yourself for that odd long period of time between classes. Or maybe you are just looking for new stories to immerse yourself in. Here are a few books to fill that time

Fablehaven

By Brandon Mull

Fablehaven is the first in a series of novels. The story follows the lives of brother and sister, Kendra and Seth. Each chapter swaps between a character’s perspective. The story starts with a car trip to their grandfather’s, with a large estate several hundred acres large. Upon arriving there, they are given two rules: Don’t leave the yard around the house, and don’t enter the barn. He also provides a small ring of keys and says to find where they go in the attic. After a while they discover a message left in a small blank journal: “Drink the milk.” As they do so they are met with a world full of wonder and amazement, but hidden under the surface is a danger neither were prepared for.

Dragon Of Ash And Stars

By H. Leighton Dickson

This book is told from the perspective of a dragon, whose scales are as black as night, from youth to adulthood. Between living in the wild and among human civilization, this dragon goes through many hardships. As a young dragon, he was always admiring the stars and the legend of a dragon who is said to be so vast that when you look up at night you are seeing his underbelly. Written in the style of a biography, the book details the ins and outs of the dragon’s life, which is admittedly a little dark. The author has written another book, Dragon of Sand and Storms.

Natural History of Dragons

By Marie Brennan

The idea behind this story is to take the mythos of dragons, drakes, and leviathans and try to understand them. Set in a sort of Victorian Era, in the mystical land of Antiope, the story follows Lady Isabella Trent and her adventures exploring the various environments that dragons live in, in an attempt to study them and understand how they live. I wonder how a world full of dragons would work in a slightly more modern setting.

Prophecy’s Ruin

By Sam Bowring

This story follows the popular tale of good versus evil, but with a side that is truly evil. Kainordas — a land of light whose magics and people need the sun to live — and Fenvarrow — a land that lives in eternal darkness with creatures that die in the light — have been at war for eons. Due to the prolonged power struggle, they have been in a stalemate for several years. A prophecy tells of a child that will be born whose power will tip the scales. When the location of the child is discovered, both countries send someone to bring the child to gain the advantage, but in the battle that occurs after finding the child, his soul is split in two, with both sides taking one. As you read it swaps between the drastically different lives that both of these boys live in a world that wants them to end a war.

Here are only a few wonderful books in the fantasy Genre. There are an infinitely large amount of fantasy books out there, so if you want send in your own suggestion. It’s a wide world and we would love to see what worlds you like to visit.
