The Southern Virginia University Men’s basketball team tallied an important conference win on Feb. 1 against Greensboro College. The Knights previously fell to the Pride in their first matchup of the season just short of a month prior, but that was no matter for the men who had already brushed it off their shoulders.

After falling behind early in the game and trailing by nine points at halftime, the Knights put their heads together and rallied back impressively to win with a score of 73–60. Here’s what a few players had to say about the conference triumph.

Considering the results of the first meeting against Greensboro, what mentality did you all have going into last night’s game?”

“Coach [Wardenburg] stressed on the belief for us to win and stay connected despite the adversity. He also kept telling us ‘believe and stay hopeful. If you don’t believe we can win, don’t get in the vans.’”

- Bryan Tapia (‘25)

“Last game they hit 11 three-pointers on us, so this time we changed our gameplans to close out shooters, and we held them back to only 5. I think that was a crucial move by coach [Wardenburg].”

- Dane Ibsen (‘23)

How important was this conference win for you in preparation for the postseason?

“Massively important; coach [Wardenburg] emphasizes taking games one at a time and getting wins game by game, so it helped build up our conference journey one more step.”

- Shaun Kenedy (‘26)

“It was a huge morale booster to win against a team that we previously lost to.”

- Jamarcus Robertson (‘26)

Koa, last night you tied the program record for rebounds in a single game (16). Does this drive you to achieve more and get even more aggressive in the paint to win possession back for your team?

“Really? I didn’t even know that 16 was the record at the time so that wasn’t even a concern of mine going into the game. It’s great to know that I reached that, but I just have the mindset to do whatever it takes to win games and build into championships, so I’ll fight for my brothers however I need to do.”

- Koa Baker (‘26)

Shaun, you led scoring in the game last night and most of those points came during the second period. After being down 9 at halftime, what flipped the switch for you all to finish off the game with a 13 point lead?

“All the credit goes to coach [Wardenburg] for keeping our heads up at halftime. I also had a lot of help from Jamarcus who took the ball up the court a lot in the second half and helped give me a bit of a rest offensively.”

- Shaun Kenedy (‘26)
