Missed the Club Fair? Here are all the Clubs this Semester

Interested in joining a club? Southern Virginia University hosted its Fall 2019 Club Fair on Thursday, Sept. 5. Here are all the club options in case you missed it. If you’re interested in any of these clubs, make sure to check the Knight app to get in contact with the club so you can join.

American Sign Language Club — The purpose of this club is to teach people American sign language and educate them on issues in the deaf community.

Badminton Club — A club to come play badminton, whether casually or competitively. You can come whether you’re a pro or never played before. Join them in the Stoddard Center on Wednesdays from 7–8 p.m. and have some fun!

Black Student Union — This club’s purpose is to bring together people of all cultures and ethnicities and to spread awareness of our differences and similarities so that we can be comfortable around people who are different from us. All are invited to come and discuss topics related to culture and ethnicity.

Chess Club — A club to come have fun and play chess. You can join regardless of skill level, whether you’ve played your whole life or not at all.

Cooking Club — A club to come and cook delicious food. The main purpose of this club is to show students that it’s not impossible to create great food in dorm kitchens cheaply. They cook foods from various cultures and teach you how to make great recipes quickly and easily at home by yourself.

Country Swing Dance Club — Come to the Ballroom on Thursdays from 9–10:30 p.m. to learn partner country swing dancing. This style of dance combines dips, spins, lifts, and other fun things from various styles of dancing. Come alone or bring a date to have fun and get some exercise!

Environmental Science Club — This club seeks to bring awareness to environmental issues such as climate change, pollution, the ecological implications of the meat and dairy industries, as well as other related issues. They do activities such as trail clean-ups, recycling, and Q and A panels with professors on relevant issues.

Grandparent Appreciation Club — This club seeks to show appreciation for grandparents and ancestors by learning about them and their lives and how to help them. They seek to foster connections with these people by going to nursing homes and helping them.

Hip Hop Breakin’ Club — This club teaches the fundamentals of hip hop, as well as how to compose yourself in a cypher and dance. All skill levels are accepted, from pros to beginners. Come and have fun!

I Am That Girl — This club discusses issues in gender equality, holding weekly discussions on topics such as feminism, education, social issues, gender inequality, relationships, and other related issues. The main focus of the club is to connect and empower women, as well as men.

Improv Club — A club devoted to everything to do with entertainment, the Improv Club works to improve its members' skills with improv comedy and skits. They produce small skits to put on YouTube, do a show about once a month, and have lots of fun doing it! Join if you enjoy acting and improvisation. All skill levels are accepted.

Knights and Dragons Club — A club designed to bring together Dungeons and Dragons players across campus and give them a solid group to play with and do campaigns in. No prior experience needed.

Latino Club — This club works to highlight Latino culture, and does so by a variety of activities, including volunteering, preparing traditional foods, and playing traditional games. Last year, they put on the Halloween Dance for the Day of the Dead, and they are planning on doing something similar this upcoming Halloween. All people are invited to join.

LGBTQAI+ and Allies Society — This club seeks to provide a supportive group for those who identify as part of the LGBTQAI+ community. They strive to educate and unite those within the community and outside of it, too. All are invited to join, regardless of whether you identify with the community or are just supportive of those inside it.

Mock Trial Club — A mock trial is an imitation court case trial performed as if it were real. This club’s purpose is to make a solid team here at Southern Virginia University to compete in mock trials in the area.

Pre-Health Professionals Society — This club works with students who are aiming to go into any type of health profession. They work on preparing for the various health-related graduate schools, doing so through test prep, guest speakers, and attending open houses of medical/dental schools. They attend RAM (Remote Area Medical) Clinics, which are clinics in which free medical care is provided to members of the community.

Printing Club — Did you know that Southern Virginia has purchased a new 3D printer? Come join this club and make things with this new piece of technology.

The Underground — This is a writing club which focuses on improving the writing of its members. They make a point to write at every club meeting, as well as providing workshopping and critiquing opportunities so that members can improve their writing and learn how to handle critiques. Although primarily focused on creative writing, they also do academic writing.
