Recently, as Valentine’s Day quickly approached, the task of finding sweet treats loomed upon me. A quick search of maps on my iPhone told me that the same places in Rockbridge County told me the same thing I already suspected: there wasn’t anything to meet my needs.

A few days later, I ran into an old friend of mine who told me that she wasn’t attending school anymore but was now working in a cupcake shop in Lexington called Cupcake Heaven. As someone very familiar with the area, I was surprised and decided I had to go check out this new cupcake shop to meet my Valentine’s Day needs. So, I went to the cupcake shop.

The local shop recently opened on December 26th, 2023. Cupcake Heaven is located at 20 W. Washington St. in Lexington, Virginia, just 12 minutes away from the Southern Virginia University campus. The shop is open Monday-Saturday 8 am to 7 pm.

Upon first walking into Cupcake Heaven, you notice how small and compact it feels. This plays into the home bakery feeling that the shop is giving off. There’s a cozy fireplace off to the right and directly in front of you is a smiling face willing to meet your cupcake needs. Oftentimes, this is a member of the Mulitalo family. The shop was opened by former Southern Virginia University football coach Ed Multalo and his wife, Laura Multalo. As longtime residents of Rockbridge County, they bring the friendly smiles that everyone has come to love into their new cupcake shop.

As Laura has been a long-time baker, she wanted to introduce something to the community that she could share. Having contact with one of the former Southern Virginia University football players’ mothers, Laura was able to find two cupcake shops that fit her dream. Upon building into that vision with persistence, the dream came to life as the third location of Cupcake Heaven.

Cupcake Heaven has nailed eight cupcake recipes. They keep these flavors — chocolate bliss, cookies n’ cream, red velvet buttercream, red velvet cream cheese, triple chocolate, vanilla almond, vanilla divine, and vanilla milk chocolate — up year-round, providing customers with not only a mini cake but the tastes of perfection and home.

For those who are daring and a little more adventurous, four new cupcake flavors are introduced weekly. With unique flavors and abstract designs, people tend to try all four weekly cupcakes every week.

With all the desserts made directly in the back of the shop, supplies are only sold until they run out each day. Competition for certain flavors is always high in demand as it is first come first serve. Each evening, Ed and Laura will come into the shop to begin baking cupcakes for the next day.

Expecting more and more people to start making sweet tooth pit stops every day, Cupcake Heaven has hopes of doing something great and bringing happiness to all. From the hundreds of cupcakes sold each day to the simple smiles on the faces behind the counter, it is already evident. Be sure to go give Cupcake Heaven a visit!
