If you are reading this, you are making history by perusing the first electronic edition of the new Southern Virginia University newspaper, The Herald.

There is nothing as inevitable as change! It’s an old saying, but it still rings true in our modern world.

Certainly, we are seeing many changes across the Southern Virginia campus as the 2017–18 academic year rolls out.

University President Reed N. Wilcox has ushered in a new era at Southern Virginia. Two notable changes include new logos, such as the knight’s helmet, and the return to the school’s original color — crimson.

The record number of students enrolled in Southern Virginia classes and the hiring of eight new faculty members, bringing an impressive list of academic credentials, are evidence of University’s leap forward.

As with every change, some will like it and others will not.

The new name, The Herald, corresponds nicely with the school’s mascot, the Knight. A herald is one who brings good news. Cambridge English Dictionary defines herald “to be a sign that something important and often good, is starting to happen.”

Heraldry has long been part of the lore of chivalry in both fact and fiction. The masthead for the online student paper was designed by Southern Virginia graduates, Corey Egbert and Alec Johnson. Several major newspapers use “herald” such as Miami Herald, Boston Herald, London Herald, Australian Herald Sun, and The Mexico Herald.

Bringing the newspaper online is aligned with the LaunchPad Initiative and the University’s commitment to build a technology-rich educational environment. Over time, The Herald will enhance the amount of news coverage and increase opportunities to participate in news production at the school.

The newspaper is the product of English 279R: Journalism and Public Communication with Professors Jon Wallin and Bruce Olsen team-teaching the class.

Our new online format will follow that found on the electronic versions of The New York Times, Time magazine and The Deseret News. News stories will be added to our site weekly. As our paper matures, production schedules may be subject to change.

Primary contributors include Jordan Benans-Hillard, Anna Bowers, Brigham Doxey, John Gaughan, Matthew Gowdy, Lauren Gowdy, Dallin Hunt, Tristram Kenworthy, Arvind Mohanan, Brad Pinkston, Zoe Reese, Tomas Schetzel, and Quinn Skouson.

We hope our stories will gain your interest.

Welcome to The Herald. Number 1 Issue 1.
