Fall is notably one of the most — if not the most — aesthetically recognizable seasons. Things like pumpkins, trees with colorful leaves, spooky stories, and overcast skies all play into this aesthetic. Fall is the coziest season, and it’s got the movies and shows that match its energy to a t. It is my personal opinion, and the opinion of any other true fall enthusiast, that Over the Garden Wall is the best show to put you right into the fall and Halloween mood. My best friend and I have made it a yearly tradition to watch this show every year in October. Frankly, you should follow suit. Over the Garden Wall has an unmatchable Halloween vibe, gorgeous soundtrack, and a fall color palette that’s pleasing to the eye.

At first glance, this show may just seem like a typical cartoon for kids, but it’s more complex than that. A watcher will start to question everything within minutes of each episode. Over the Garden Wall follows two brothers, Wirt and Greg. Somehow, they have become lost and are trying to find their way home. Wirt is the eldest brother, a shy and nervous kid. His younger brother, Greg, is the funniest character in the show. He delivers all his lines in such a sweet, earnest manner you can’t help but laugh. In their wanderings, the two witty brothers encounter a whole array of Halloween-themed characters including an entire town of skeletons who don pumpkins to celebrate the coming of fall.

Over the Garden Wall is truly a masterpiece because it balances an underlying feeling of eeriness with comedy. It’s topped with no small amount of memorable catchphrases. The show really shines in making each short, ten minute episode, a memorable journey for the viewer, and its ability to introduce a base level of philosophical thought. There are also many Easter eggs; you can rewatch this show over and over again, noticing something new every time. Whether you’re a kid or adult, casual TV watcher or Netflix binger, Over the Garden Wall will not disappoint. I strongly recommend you check it out to make your fall season complete.
