Southern Virginia University student Charles Ferry is a senior graduating in 2021.

On Jan. 26, Southern Virginia University student Charles Ferry (’21) was featured in a Deseret News article about up and coming young Conservatives across the United States. The article’s title is “Can young conservatives save the GOP?” and features seven young republicans from around the country, Ferry among them, who the article says are “charting a more diverse, inclusive path for the Republican Party”. Ferry himself is majoring in political science, with a minor in economics and music. Ferry currently serves as the Chairman of the Southern Virginia College Republicans and works full time for Delegate Ronnie Campbell in the House of Delegates as his legislative aid.

“I’m a right-of-center Republican. I have pretty, they say, ‘compassionate views’…That said, I very very strongly believe in those values of the Republican Party,” says Ferry.

Ferry says that Deseret News first heard of him when they were “interviewing my good friend and superior Courtney Britt, who made the connection that both the Deseret News and myself are from Utah, and my name was mentioned as someone who’s spent the last several years working in conservative politics in Virginia.”

Ferry grew up in Corinne, Utah and comes from a family of fifth generation farmers and is himself a third generation politician. Southern Virginia University has made an impact on Ferry politically. He explains, “At [Southern Virginia University] I was exposed to a lot of differing perspectives”. The University and Virginia itself has been “integral” to his political journey and Ferry says, “It exposed me to other viewpoints that weren’t coming from hardcore right and so it gave me a full range of political beliefs.”

Ferry adds,“Through [Southern Virginia] I’ve chartered the College Republican’s chapter here, and have really been able to work and realize a lot of political connections that way. “
