The chalk slogans and punny posters are back. With handshakes and free treats, candidates for Student Body President began a week-long campaign today.

It’s time for politics at Southern Virginia University.

Today marked the campaign kickoff for Student Body President, Vice President of Campus Relations, and Vice President of Student Services. The campaign process includes events for the student body to get to know the candidates, as well as informational meetings hosted by current members of the Student Association.

The first event of the week will be a campaign fair on Chandler Field at noon on Wednesday, April 4th. This will be a ‘get-to-know-you’ event where candidates for Vice President and President will students can learn more about their candidates and their platforms.

The elections will have a similar format as years prior:

Votes will be collected via email. For a quick tally, voting ballots are sent out at 8 am on Friday, April 6th to the student body via their student emails. Only one vote for each office can be cast per email ballot.

The elections will have a runoff. Unless a candidate wins by 50% of the popular vote, then the two candidates with the most votes will face each other in a second round of voting. Because Southern Virginia has such a small campus, this style of election is used to make sure that the majority of students are represented.

Elections will be staggered. Campaigns and elections for the executive committee, which consists of the Student Body President, Vice President of Campus Relations, and Vice President of Student Services, are held this week. Campaigns of senators will be conducted the following week, April 9–13.
