On Monday, April 16 Southern Virginia’s women’s ensemble, Bella Voce, will perform in Thompson: Frostiana, a national choral event to be held at the National Cathedral in Washington D.C.

For Dr. Kyle Nielsen, Director of Choral Studies, trips like this are a significant part of his work. “I think its important to branch outward into other cultures, around people of different backgrounds, as well as being able to have the opportunity to sing in venues that students wouldn’t have otherwise,” he said.

Bella Voce will join The National Festival Choir and high school choirs from across the country, but the ensemble is the only collegiate group attending. The ensemble has been preparing an extensive repertoire this semester with selections in English, French, German, Latin, Swahili, Persian and Estonian. Their rendition of O Sapientia will mark the first ever in the United States.

Bella Voce received an invitation to the festival through Nielson’s work with Manhattan Concert Productions, a New York-based production company that coordinates performances at prestigious venues including the National Cathedral, Carnegie Hall, and the Kennedy Center.
