On Saturday the Southern Virginia Esports team will be hosting a campus event to connect with other students. The school will be putting on several game night activities starting at 7 p.m. in the Arena with a variety of games to play and an opportunity for those who attend to win a Nintendo Switch.

The two directors of the team, Michael Daniels and Jeff Swift, have put an emphasis on combining a positive environment and faith supported program to help develop the life skills in their players. The mission statement of the team says the program is designed to “helps team members develop academically, personally, professionally, socially, and spiritually.”

This season is the team’s first intercollegiate season. The team was first established last school year and during their first season, they played against each other. They have now expanded to play against other universities like Akron University and Virginia Tech. The members of the team play four different games, League of Legends, Starcraft 2, Super Smash Brothers Ultimate, and Rocket League.

The Esports team has had its first victory on Oct. 26. The team won their first set against an opposing team in a set of League of legends. David Torp, 22, was casting the game at the time. Expressing his excitement over the win he said “It was awesome. The final score was 2 to 1. It was super exciting to see all my friends win. Having them win the first game, lose the second, and then bounce back in the third to take the set was really cool to watch.”

The Esports team will have their next matches on Saturday as well. They’ll be playing Rocket League and League of Legends against St. Josephs’s University, Temple University, West Virginia, and West Virginia Wesleyan starting at 3 pm in the Arena.
