In an effort to bring the Southern Virginia University campus together this semester, each grade class is hosting a social event. Working with Student Life, the different graduating classes at the school have been organizing events designed to enrich campus experience for students. The junior class hosted a tie-dye event on Mar.18 and the senior class held a glow-in-the-dark disco roller skating event on Mar. 27.

The Student Life House has been very careful and cautious in making sure that students are safe and not putting themselves at risk of contracting COVID-19 by attending. All attendees are required to come masked, and keep a 6-foot distance between themselves and others.

During the tie-dye event, which was on Mar. 18, the junior class invited students to tie-dye t-shirts at the Student Life House from 12–5 p.m. Similar to many other events that the Student Life House has organized during the pandemic, this was a pop-up event that ran for several hours. Students came in small groups and tie-dyed white t-shirts, which were supplied by the Student Life House, using rubber bands and many colors to dye their shirts.

Katie Larsen (‘22), who attended the tie-dye event, says, “It was a super awesome activity that didn’t necessarily require a ton of people to meet together, but still got students out and about and doing something different from their normal routine. It was just something fun to do and I appreciated that!”

Saturday, Mar. 27, the senior class hosted a “Roller Disglow”, a glow-in-the-dark disco on roller skates event held in the Knight Arena from 8–12 p.m. Attendees were encouraged to wear costumes from the ’70s and ’80s and were each required to sign up for a specific 20-minute time slot to skate. Student Life provided all equipment, including the roller skates and glow sticks.

“I loved the roller skating event! I’ve been pretty antisocial this semester, but the skating activity was a wonderful opportunity for me to catch up with some friends and have some fun!” says Tess Carbone (‘22), who attended the skating event.

More upcoming social events can be found on the Student Life Instagram.
