SVU Idol Happening Soon!

On Saturday April 16, Southern Virginia University will be hosting its very own singing competition, SVU Idol. The competition is finally making its long-awaited return after not being held since 2020.

SVU Idol will be set up and held by the Student Life House, run by Katherine Cannon. Cannon noted, “SVU Idol is a longtime singing competition loved by the student body. It’s a night filled with entertainment from talented students showcasing their voices!”

SVU idol takes the shape of the nationally loved TV show American Idol. America witnessed talents such as Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, and Phillip Phillips. In addition, we saw Larry Platt sing (quite possibly) the best song ever written “Pants on the Ground.” American Idol provides a platform intended to expose musical artists who may not get another shot.

In turn, Southern Virginia University created its own take on American Idol to provide students with that same opportunity. Unlike the contestants of American Idol, those of us without angelic voices sadly do not have a chance to make it on national TV. Despite this, we all have the chance to support our fellow schoolmates as we vote week to week on who we want to win. The competition will last until late April when the winner will finally be crowned.

“We actually didn’t have an SVU Idol last year.. In fact the last year we had it was 2020 (before the mass exodus of COVID) and I believe Sydney Peterson won,” Cannon explained. “In 2021 we tried to do SVU’s Got Talent and aired it online- the winners were an all girl trio consisting of: Ellie Thompson, Ellie Simpson, and Isabel Bramhall.

I am thrilled that we are able to have SVU Idol in person this year!”
