This past weekend, Southern Virginia University fine arts students participated in a concert held at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Lexington, Virginia. With the broad church chamber filled from front to back, many people were in attendance. The orchestra and choir sat simply at the front of the audience. The concert highlighted the skills of the Camerata Orchestra and Chamber Singers, both of Southern Virginia University.

At the helm of the 15 strings, the orchestra was led by Dr. Jakob Homer who has been at the university since 2020. Members of the choir are currently under the command of Dr. Kyle Nielsen. With soloists including Chelsea Helm and our very own Dr. Mackenzie Romriell, the music came together from the start. The orchestra would take turns playing sometimes, then the Chamber Choir, then they would play together, then soloists would stand up and perform. The long pieces were filled with rising and falling sounds as pitch changes back and forth. The long practice hours paid off.

With aspiring listeners across Rockbridge County, the Southern Virginia University Music Program encourages all to show up to their events. The program’s next event is to be hosted on the Southern Virginia University Campus in the Main Hall Ballroom on March 29th at 7:30 pm. This event will be a composition extravaganza concert, featuring students from the school. Singers and instrumentalists will be performing. Be sure to mark your calendars!
