After the Kansas City Chiefs won Super Bowl LVII, many have brought up the question, “Is Patrick Mahomes the greatest of all time in the NFL?” Another interesting question was brought up on ESPN. The question was, “Who is closer in the GOAT debate, Patrick Mahomes to Tom Brady, or LeBron James to Michael Jordan?”

A poll was sent out to some SVU students on who they believe is the greatest of all time between Mahomes and Brady, as well as LeBron and Jordan. Roughly 90% of students said that LeBron James is closer to Michael Jordan. This leaves very little of SVU students voting for Mahomes. Here is what I think…

I feel like it is outrageous that people actually believe that Patrick Mahomes is close to Tom Brady in being the greatest of all time. Tom Brady has 7 Super Bowl wins, Mahomes has 3. Tom Brady beat Patrick Mahomes in the Super Bowl in 2021 when Brady was 43 years old.

I know Patrick Mahomes is only 28 years old and already has 3 Super Bowl wins, but he is still 4 away. Winning the Super Bowl is one of the hardest things to do in sports, and I honestly don’t see Patrick Mahomes winning 4 more times. In order for Patrick Mahomes to surpass Tom Brady in the GOAT debate, he has to win at least 6 Super Bowls and have his stats pass Tom Brady as well.

In a league where injuries are so common in limiting a player’s potential, Patrick Mahomes needs to prove that he can win for years and years before he can be declared the greatest of all time. As sports fans, we need to stop making out of pocket comparisons between two athletes where one has completed their career, and the other has just only begun.
