Dating can be a wonderful and exciting experience, where you can meet new people and form strong relationships. Unfortunately, it can also be the exact opposite; people don’t meet expectations, something embarrassing happens, or you just don’t have much in common with your date. Almost everyone is sure to have at least one story where a date didn’t go right. With Valentine’s Day coming up soon, we asked SVU students about some of the worst dates they have had during their college experience:

Bit of an Age Gap

  1. “It was my first date here. I was 18, he was 26.”

Talk about an age gap! Even though almost everyone here at SVU is over 18, a lot of people have different opinions on what appropriate age gaps are. A good way to avoid problems is by discussing each other’s ages and finding out what each other’s ideal age range would be.

Two for One Date?

2. “Invited to a group date. My date brought another date.”

Yikes! When you ask someone out, if you decide that there is someone else you would like to go out with, remember to honor your commitment with the original person or be honest and let them know that you don’t want to go out with them anymore. Don’t just bring a second date and assume everything will work itself out.

Not a Fan of Frisbee Golf

3. “3 hours of frisbee golf.”

Man, that sounds like a long date! Remember that when you plan a date, even if an activity is fun for you, it might not be fun for your date. Talking to your date about the plan beforehand is important, and you can discuss how much time each of you would want to take to do certain activities. This way, it’s more likely that both of you will enjoy the date rather than getting bored.

Hopefully, these stories can serve a reminder of what not to do. Proper communication between you and your date is one of the most important things you can do to prepare, and can be the difference between the date being successful or unsuccessful. Happy Valentine’s Day!
