Glimmers of light amidst the darkness

In my undergraduate days, 40 years ago, F.S.L Lyons’ Ireland Since the Famine was widely regarded as the most authoritative account of 120 years of Irish history up to the 1960s.

In that work, Professor Lyons described Ireland’s awakening in 1945 from the hibernation of “the emergency” and neutrality of World War 2 thus:
