Announcing Our Asia Bureau and Advisory Group

A shot of the team from last year.

It has been a busy summer at The Information and there are two big announcements we’d like to share.

New Asia Bureau

We’re delighted Shai Oster is joining us as our Asia bureau chief based in Hong Kong. Shai is a Pulitzer Prize winning investigative journalist joining us from Bloomberg where he has been covering tech and finance. Before that, he was a long-time reporter for the Wall Street Journal in China.

I started following Shai’s coverage closely because he goes where few other tech reporters dare. He traveled inside iPhone factories, explained the real implications of new VIE rules for investors and covered hyped-up startups from a smart, tough lense.

As our coverage of China has grown to some of our most popular stories, I’m thrilled that Shai and the team will help us better serve our subscribers around the world with stories about what’s happening on the ground in Asia. And as Asia represents one of our fastest growing areas for subscriptions, he’ll be helping build our community. He plans to start in September and you can follow him now at @beijingscribe.

Advisory Group

Speaking of great people, I’m also very excited to share that we’ve pulled together an informal Advisory Group for The Information. As a reporter, the only way I know how to build a company is to ask a lot of questions. These generous people are often the first ones I call, and I’m so grateful that they’ve agreed to continue to help out.

Hayley Barna, venture partner at First Round Capital and co-founder of Birchbox

John Doerr, Silicon Valley investor who is the chairman of Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers

Steven Rubenstein, president of Rubenstein, a strategic communications firm

Tina Sharkey, senior partner at Sherpa Foundry and venture partner at Sherpa Capital, and co-founder of iVillage.

Paul Steiger, the executive chairman and founding editor-in-chief of ProPublica, the non-profit, non-partisan newsroom that produces investigative reporting in the public interest

Jim VandeHei, co-founder of POLITICO, the transformative news site for politics and policy

We sought advisors who represent the different areas of our subscriber base and the group is informal, without compensation. (Like other publications, we’ll always disclose if we write about them.)
