Rainbows are often referred to as magical bridges across the sky full of colors. Children also look at rainbows as mystical things. This week our preschool classroom was filled with colorful activities as we duplicated making rainbows in the classroom to make this magical experience a more real one!

At this stage we have many curious preschoolers who like to ask ‘why’ questions. Whether it is learning shapes, numbers and colors they are always having fun and so eager to learn more! To kick off learning, we began our discussions by asking the children a few interesting questions.

Have you ever seen a rainbow in the sky?

Was it on a rainy or sunny day?

What did it look like?

Can you name the colors of the rainbow?

Our young ones gave us some amazing responses which we’ve recorded in their learning journeys!

Some of the highlights of this week’s activities were making a giant rainbow collage as collaborative art in school which was inspired by the radiant colors of a rainbow. This not only helped with color recognition but also worked on strengthening social skills such as sharing materials, taking turns and helping each other. The children used play dough and the vibrant pipe cleaners creatively to make a lovely rainbow arch and were very proud of their end product.

During tinker tots, we took out some CDs and our little discoverers played around making different patterns on the wall and when we asked them what they could see, they exclaimed ‘light!’ ‘colors!’ ‘orange!’ ‘purple!’ ‘pink!’ They were quite amused by this discovery and also developed a rudimentary understanding of the science fact that sunlight can be be reflected making a rainbow colored pattern on the wall. The brightly colored confetti tuff tray was the most popular activity and the children associated the colors to that of one of their favorite story characters ‘Elmer.’ We love how children make personal connections to all learning!

This weekend engage with your little one in looking around for different coloured items around the house that are the colours of a rainbow. You are more than welcome to send these items to school, we would love to share them with all the other children in the class.
