Did you know our lungs hold 13 pints of air every minute, and can float on water?

This week, the students created lung models using straws and clear plastic bags for STEM. They also cut and pasted the nose, the mouth, the windpipe and the lungs onto coloured paper. Through this activity, the students learned the route that air takes from the time it enters our body through the nose or mouth, down the windpipe, and into the lungs. This activity tied in well with class discussions about the importance of physical activity and its impact on our body.

We believe there is great learning in collaboration. That is why we paired the children up in this project. The children really enjoyed putting the model together and blowing into their lungs. Looking at the lung model, a student inquired into how speech and breathing were connected and exclaimed that he wanted to know more about what parts of the body were involved in speaking. What an amazing connection!

This activity will be followed by another where students will measure their lung capacity using balloons and a tape measure. Stay tuned!
