This week our preschoolers have been busy exploring the wonderful world of colors and shapes with our new topic. The children engaged in various hands on activities to understand concepts of matching and sorting which are foundational for other concepts such as comparing, contrasting, ordering and developing early numeracy skills.

One of our favorite activities this week were color sort using colored tissue roll tubes and Popsicle sticks, where the children worked in together to match and sort while also extending learning through conversations about their favorite colors. It was amazing to see how well each of them cooperated and took turns to share the sticks and tubes. We are so proud of them!

Another popular color sorting activity was finding different objects in the classroom and matching them to the colored sections of our giant parachute! This activity was extended by counting how many objects we found for each color and comparing which had more or less. Isn’t it amazing how one new concept leads to another?

We also used our outdoor play time to play a color hop game using brightly colored circle mats. The children made their play more exciting by jumping, jogging, marching and tiptoeing during the activity.

Listen closely to your little ones this week. Have you heard them sing or hum the new Elmer song about colors? You can join in too! Follow the link below to enjoy listening and singing with them:
