Making new discoveries and creating a stimulating environment for preschoolers through STEM activities, ignites their curiosity and builds upon their natural inclination to explore and ask questions. From building bridges, to making pet houses, the opportunities are endless!

This week in our preschool classroom we had an amazing time exploring how colours mix and fizz through a fun science experiment in line with our theme ‘Colours and Shapes.’ Three simple ingredients filled the room with so much excitement! The children were all geared up to have a go as they started by choosing their favourite food colours and carefully used droppers to mix them in water to create colour mixtures. We then added a few spoons of baking soda on our trays and each of them had a chance to drop colours on it. They gradually added vinegar on the tray and were wowed to see how bubbles appeared and colours mixed. Some comments we overheard:

“It’s a rainbow!”

“Smells like medicine!”

“It’s making sounds!”

It was wonderful to see how the children used their senses to make connections and observations about what they could see, smell and hear.

Do you know what our preschoolers were doing while engaged in this experiment?

  • Enhancing fine motor skills by squeezing droppers, pouring vinegar and worked on controlling small movements
  • Developing mathematical skills by counting how many drops of food colouring were added
  • Listening and following instructions
  • Using problem solving skills to observe how changes occur and how colours mix to form new colours and how colours change from dark to light
  • Using descriptive words to explain what they observed such as fizz, pop etc.
  • Developing confidence to make their own choices

Let you children experiment, explore and enjoy :)
