As part of our Unit of Inquiry in kindergarten we recently talked about the importance of family and how each member of our family plays a major role in our life.

We talked about family structures such as nuclear and joint families. We also explored the meanings of immediate and extended families with the children. We discussed children’s relationships with their parents, grandparents and their cousins. The discussion deepened as we spoke of how each member of the family contributes to our lives and how our lives would be impacted if any member is absent.

One recurring question throughout the discussion was what is a family? What does it mean to be a part of a family? Why is it important to be a contributing member? We got some amazing responses! Our Kindergarteners came up with answers such as family means everyone is together, families care for each other, family means living in one home etc. One Kindergartener mentioned how she gets water for her grandmother whenever she’s thirsty. Another mentioned how “family is family even if you live in different houses! Far or near doesn’t matter.”

This theme and related activities allowed children to understand that family is a part of identity and has a strong link to who we are. Moreover, it also allowed us to appreciate the small and big efforts family members make in our lives. We concluded the topic by showing gratitude to our Ivy families by making ‘thank you cards’ for them!

We are so happy you’re a part of our Ivy community!
