Our Shining Stars!

Recently, our Kindergarteners created calming glitter bottles as part of a STEM and behaviour management activity. These bottles offer a quick way to refocus and help manage ‘big’ feelings. Sometimes, when we feel a child is struggling with a difficult emotion and may need some alone time to reflect, we allow them to sit in a calming zone in the classroom which we call our ‘Reflection Centre.’ The swirling patterns in the bottle, created by mixing glitter, water and food colouring set the mood and provide a therapeutic environment where children can look back and reflect on their actions.

Our glitter bottles included more than just glitter and have to date offered endless opportunities for play. While making the bottles, children discussed the ingredients and helped create the mixtures. They chose their own food and glitter colours and took turns pouring mixtures into their bottles. They also personalised their bottles with creative art material such as water beads, coloured buttons and confetti stars to make them more attractive.

We believe strongly in providing children daily opportunities to reflect on their actions. Our glitter bottles are one way we include reflection in the curriculum.
