When we feel our students our ready to learn together, we mix our classes! This week our Junior Kindergarten, Kindergarten and Grade 1 students together conducted a Sugar Shocker activity for STEM.

This activity was connected to Grade 1’s current Unit of Inquiry on Healthy Living. The students used a food scale to measure out the amount of sugar found in commonly enjoyed drinks like Milo, Coca Cola, and Slice. This hands-on activity helped them visualised the amount of sugar they are ingesting while drinking soda and juice. All students loved scooping out sugar onto the weighing scale and discussing the merits of healthy eating. We even had some “Aha!” moments when students remarked that they will stick to drinking only water and milk from now on. The activity was followed by a brief video shown to the kids about the effect of sugar on our teeth.

Multi-grade lessons have been linked with positive social-emotional behaviours such as empathy and cooperation. If the lesson is engaging, relevant, and aligns with interests, different age groups can be actively involved in skill-building while learning together!
