Autism: Special needs for special kids

Autism, nowadays called “autism spectrum disorder”, refers to a wide range of diseases caused by deterioration in brain development that impairs social interaction abilities. About Autism spectrum disorder affects around one out of every 100 children. Characteristics can be identified in early childhood, but autism is often not diagnosed until much later. The earlier they receive support and therapy, the greater their chances of coping with the condition and progressing in their development.

Therefore, world autism awareness day aims to increase understanding and acceptance of people with autism and fostering worldwide support. It was proposed by Moza bint Nasser Al-Missned, the United Nations Representative from Qatar, and supported by all member states takes place every year on 2nd of April since 2008.

Social Interaction is Challenging

Many children with autism spectrum discorder do not respond to their names. They demonstrate a lack of interest and interaction with other children and adults — or isolate them self being frustrated that their attemps of social interaction is not working.

They struggle with social play, understanding what others think or feel, and controlling their own emotions. The majority of children with autism have varying speaking disabilities. While some children do not learn to speak at all, others interpret words literally, unable to understand proverbs, jokes, and irony.

A subset of affected children engages in repetitive behaviors such as hand flapping, swinging, jumping, rotating, arranging, and rearranging objects, and repeating sounds, words, or phrases. Some individuals spend hours arranging toys in a specific way rather than utilizing them to play.

Adults with autism organize things at home in a specific sequence and may become upset if someone or something violates that arrangement. People with autism have sensory processing issues, thus they dislike being touched and feel uncomfortable around noise.
