Built in the 1880s by Lord George Stephen, the building on Drummond street, at the base of the Golden Square Mile, is one of the most prestigious buildings in Montreal. Originally a family residence, it was turned into The Mount Stephen Club in 1926 when the property was sold to Noah Timmins, J.H. Maher and J.S. Dohan. The private social club was the epicentre for Montreal’s elite Anglophone community.

Unfortunately, like most private clubs in the city, The Mount Stephan Club fell on hard times in the late 90s, and was sold in 2006 to a hotel & real estate group and slated for redevelopment. This week they’ve opened the Mount Stephen Hotel, as well as the restaurant Bar George — which promises many of the same amenities and service you might have experience had you visited in the 1930s. Find the photos from opening night below.
