Without further ado, let’s get started!

If you have clicked on this post, you may already know what a Turing Test is. However, to get things rolling, the Turing Test was a test proposed by Alan Turing (no, not Benedict Cumberbatch) which states that a machine learning model passes the test if a human, after asking some questions is unable to work out whether the answers come from a computer or a human.

The Turing Test has been a really effective measure to determine the intelligence of a machine and the desire to pass it has been the motivation of many great algorithms.

So, you may ask how is it irrelevant?

Alright hear me out (or rather read), to quote Artificial Intelligence - A Modern Approach (great book, go read it!)

The quest for “artificial flight” succeeded when the Wright brothers and others stopped imitating birds and started using wind tunnels and learning about aerodynamics.

Sounds logical right?

And that is precisely the reason that makes turing test irrelevant. We don’t have to make machines imitate humans anymore. Although it has been sort of guiding path for A.I, it’s time to switch paths.

In the quest of super-intelligence if we stop trying to make machines more human-like but rather more intelligent then, maybe (just maybe) we can find it.

Aeronautical engineering texts do not define the goal of their field as making “machines that fly so exactly like pigeons that they can fool even other pigeons.”
