A ready-to-go type of player who can provide extra energy in the court whenever tapped from the bench. That’s how one can perceive Adamson Lady Falcon prized rookie Trisha Mae Genesis is contributing to the team’s development. The fiery eyes of the Adamson skipper everytime she attempts for an attack shows how passionate she is in playing for the UAAP which she just dreamed of back then. In this article, Trisha Genesis had her fair share of the challenges and the road she took before entering the Falcons’ Nest.

Knowing an unfamiliar sport

The Sta. Rosa, Laguna native started playing when her father got home from Japan and urged her to play volleyball. Until now, she still doesn’t know why her father forced her to play the game because most of their family members were raised to play basketball, even her three sisters. With all honesty, Trisha Genesis admitted that she really doesn’t want to play volleyball because she doesn’t want commitments that will just give her burdens on her life.

“Hindi kasi talaga ako sporty type na tao. Well, nung una ko siyang nalaro, masaya sa feeling, ang saya saya niya laruin, yun nga lang ayoko talagang maglaro noon. Pero as time goes by, natututunan ko ng mahalin, which is sobrang mahal na mahal ko na ngayon.” shared Genesis.

Trisha Genesis started to build up her confidence and strength when she became part of her previous team Holy Rosary College Rhinos and was positioned as opposite spiker.

A dream came true

For Trisha Genesis, the moment that she fell in love with volleyball was also the time that she dreamt to become part of UAAP league. She even described the league as the battle of the fittest where you have to be strong and determined to survive.

Genesis was discovered by Adamson University when Akari, the university’s main sponsor, came in Laguna. That was the time that Adamson tried to recruit her to join the team. At first, she refused the offer of Adamson because she still doesn’t know what school to choose in college and she was more focused on her final playing year in high school league.

But who would have thought that the player who have once doubted herself will be a prime prospect for collegiate volleyball? After dishing an outstanding performance during her high school days, the name Trisha Genesis became prominent prospect for college scouts. All of the universities in the UAAP tried to recruit Trisha Genesis but among these institutions, she chose to be part of the Adamson community. The way how Adamson convinced Genesis assured her that there is a bright future ahead of her when she played for the San Marcelino volleybelles.

“Why did I choose AdU? Simple lang, dahil Adamson siya, Adamson is Adamson, sobrang ganda ng community ng Adamson, especially ‘yung pakikitungo ng mga tao dito na kung ituturing ka sobrang welcome na welcome ka talaga.” she said.

Being part of Adamson WVT

On her way to the UAAP, there were many challenges that restrained her from pursuing her career. There was a point in her life that she wanted to give up everything and lost her motivation in playing because she had hard times adjusting to the system of the team. Yet, because ofher passion for the game, she told to herself that no matter what happens she can and she will do it.

“Bandang huli naisip ko ito ‘yung pangarap ko e, ba’t ko bibitawan, matagal nanaman akong nahihirapan so dapat sanay na akong i-handle yung mga bagay bagay lalo sa mga bagay na ganito, then ‘yun nung napagtagumapayan ko na labanan.”

Adding up to her challenges today is the 2–12 standing of her team, Adamson Lady Falcons in UAAP Season 81 Women’s Volleyball league. She said that they’re having hard times in the court because they lack in training but she’s still optimistic that they will bounce back and strike again next season.

For Genesis, discipline is the key for a team’s success. Discipline in the game, to your team and to yourself will help you reach the goal.

“Malalim na pagsunod, disiplina. Kung gusto mong mas malayo ang marating mo, matuto kang sumunod sa lahat ng nagtuturo sayo, matuto kang tumanggap ng mga pagkakamali mo, dapat ready ka parin na matuto at makinig kahit alam mo sa sarili mo na alam mo na ‘yung mga bagay na yun. Dapat hindi ka magsasawa na matuto at makinig, kasi ‘yan na ‘yan ang magaangat sayo.” Genesis shared in an interview.

Fun Fact about Genesis

Just like other teenagers in this generation, Genesis is also a K-pop fan. She admits that she’s a multi-fandom of K-pop groups such as BTS, Exo, Twice, Itzy, and TxT. For Genesis, K-Pop music helps her to boost her energy during practice everyday. She even cover dance steps of these groups during her vacant time in training.

“Nakakatulong sila sa’kin (K-pop Groups) kasi nagsimula lang din sila sa wala.” Genesis shared. K-pop groups help her to become inspired in continuing her career. She even relates how her career is the same with these K-pop groups. At first, there were people who did not believe in her capabilities as a volleyball player but she didn’t stop there. She proved herself and disregard those criticisms which tried to put her down.

On being a student-athlete

As student athletes, there are times that they would not enter their classes but Trisha Genesis do not forget her responsibilities in school. She’s ensuring that she doesn’t miss any requirements because it’s also her responsibility to balance her volleyball career and school works. As the university welcomed her, she wants to give credits to those people who helped her to make her dreams come true.

“To AdU community, thank you sa pagtitiwala and sa walang sawang pagsuporta. ‘Wag kayong magalala, ‘di ko ipapangako pero gagawin po namin lahat para maabot ‘yung inaasam nating kampeyonato. Maraming salamat po.” said Genesis.

Trisha Genesis’ rookie year is a statement of what she can for the coming years; a queen falcon in the making.
