The Swedish EV maker Polestar ($PSNY) is bringing a notable update to the electric performance fastback, Polestar 2, for its 2024 model year. The premium compact EV features a reinvigorated front end following the design language debuted by Polestar 3 and improved performance with powerful new electric motors, updated batteries, sustainability enhancements, plus rear-wheel drive, a first for Polestar models.

  • New motors, refined ride and rear-wheel drive for single-motor versions
  • Quicker charging and longer range — now up to 635 km WLTP
  • Sustainability improvements reduce carbon impact by 1.1 tonnes
  • SmartZone debuts following introduction on Polestar 3
  • Driver Awareness features and wireless phone charger added to list of standard equipment

“Typically in the car industry, a facelift introduces superficial visual changes that often destroy the original intention of the car’s design theme. With the new model year Polestar 2, we rather went below the surface and upgraded substantial tech and mechanical components of the electric drivetrain. This is the best Polestar 2 yet, and with the updated front design with the new SmartZone, the best looking one, too,” says Polestar CEO, Thomas Ingenlath.

Polestar 2 continues with the introduction of SmartZone, exemplifying the innovative, high-tech nature of Polestar vehicles. This area houses key passive safety systems such as the front-facing camera and mid-range radar. To complete this look, the Performance Pack provides updated 20-inch forged alloy wheels, accentuating the sporty styling of Polestar 2 and 3.

Polestar 2 has been upgraded with next-generation electric motors and inverters, providing improved efficiency and performance. All models now come fitted with a rear-wheel drive motor that has been specially designed with a permanent magnet motor and silicon carbide inverter for increased power output of up to 220 kW and 490 Nm of torque. This results in a 0–100 km/h time cutdown by 1.2 seconds, bringing the time down to 6.2 seconds.

The batteries benefit from a newly designed battery disconnect unit, upgraded busbars and improved cell chemistry, with recharge rate up to 205 kW DC for the long range option and 135 kW for the standard choice. This optimisation of power delivery from stronger motors facilitates improved range — particularly in the Dual motor Long Range feature, which now offers 592 km WLTP[3], increasing 105 km. Furthermore, Single motor Standard Range boasts an impressive 518 km WLTP[3] (an increase of 40 km) and the Long Range Single motor achieves 635 km WLTP[2] (a rise of 84 km).
