2. Princess Charlotte popularized the Christmas tree in England

When we usually think of her Christmas tree, we think of Prince Albert (the consort of Queen Victoria) who popularized them in England, but the first known Christmas tree was built in December 1800 at Queen's Lodge. Built by Princess Charlotte in Windsor.

The Coca-Cola Company is often credited with creating the modern image of Santa's red cloak that we know and love today, but that's not true! Most of its modern imagery dates back to 1870s, compiled by Thomas Nast.

According to legend, the origin of candy canes dates back to the 1670s, when a German choirmaster handed out candy canes to his choir students to keep them quiet during services. Hooks were meant to symbolize shepherd crooks on the occasion of Christmas, but others believe that hooks existed so that they could be easily hung from trees.

In the United States, campaigns such as Operation Santa have been running for decades. The campaign has hundreds of volunteers across the country charged with answering letters from children to Santa. So children who write letters to Santa Claus will get a reply from Santa Claus!

8. Bad guys get Krampus instead of coal in Austria

Krampus, half-man, half-goat creatures who punish mischievous children by chasing them around or dragging them into hell at Christmas time, are like coal in Santa's stockings in Austria. In some parts of Austria, adults dress up as Krampus every year to scare children into doing bad things.

9. It was illegal to celebrate Christmas in America for 260 years.

You may know that Oliver Cromwell banned pagan Christmas in England for 12 years starting in 1647, but did you know that the ban was not lifted in Oklahoma, USA, until 1907? It means that in some parts of the world, Christmas has been banned for over 260 years.

10. Queen Victoria sent her first official Christmas card

Queen Victoria was the first public figure to send her a card at Christmas, but her first commercial card came in 1843 when Sir Henry Cole made 1000 of hers and sold them for 1 shilling. . There are now only 12 of these cards left in the world, one of which was put up for auction a few years ago.
