It is rare to find Physicians running businesses. It is frowned at by a majority of my colleagues and also many of them believe that it is outrightly wrong to run a business alongside practice and I disagree with them.

2006, I just left school and went on the one-year mandatory training. At the expiration of that, all I wanted was to go and do my Masters and get a job as most of my colleagues did but deep down, I knew I wanted more. So I got a job as a Customer service representative in one of the biggest telecommunication industries and that was the beginning of my taste in business. I stayed with the company for about 18 months and I left and came back to my profession. I realized then, that I love my profession. I love helping people. Making them feel better.

In 2011, I started my practice and in a few years, I started doing very well. Patients were coming and I was doing very okay. But emotionally, I wasn’t. My motivation changed from taking care of patients to billing them well enough (of course) as that is my only source of income and I have to pay bills and salaries etc. I tried not to let it influence me but that wasn’t possible because I still have bills to pay. So after four years of depending solely on my professional income, I had to start thinking of diversifying.

I started my first business which I partnered with my husband. It worked for some time until the company came up with a new policy that didn’t favor us so we shut it down. We tried a couple of other businesses, some worked out, some didn’t but we kept going.

Then I came across Passive Income and I took it a step further to study it. I realized that passive income is exactly what I am looking for. It is an income that takes care of my passive bills and can take care of my desired lifestyle. It can grow to become a huge income. An income that can greatly improve the quality of my practice, my lifestyle and my family’s’.

I began my research on the best passive income module I can start. I considered a lot of them, from Real Estate to Cryptocurrency to Network Marketing. I found out some commonalities among these three.

These three have been called scams in the past. These three have cost many people to lose lots of money in the past. These three have made lots of people millionaires in the past. Now out of these three, which has the least risk? Which will not interfere in any way, my practice? Which can I understand easily? Which has the least chances of failing? Which can pay me out faster? Which can generate more and steady income? Which can I leave as a legacy for my children?

Of course, Real Estate topped my chart but the capital I need to start the business wasn’t available. The next best choice became Network Marketing. So in 2018, I signed up with a reputable company after 6 months of research and study. It took me three months the get the business off the ground. And it took that long because I only dedicated two hours after work to it per day. I studied all the possible materials I could lay my hands on so I learned what worked for some people and what didn’t work. I paid more attention to those who became millionaires in the profession. I studied them, what they put up on social media, how they talk on Youtube etc.

So when I started, I took off. Within 15months, I grew a big team of over 1000. About 150 personally sponsored by me. The profession started changing me. I started working on my personal development. I took up public speaking by the side. I picked up writing (lol) and I discovered I love it. I started becoming more visible on social media. My practice started growing. I started earning weekly from the Network Marketing business. Within 1 year, I no longer depend heavily on my salary. I could afford to join a charity organization (I joined the Rotary club). I am no longer being influenced by patient payment. I now render help even beyond medical practice to patients. When some of them can’t pay their bills and I can now afford to help them.

I spend more quality time with my patients. I am no longer in a hurry to dismiss one to attend to another because I need to meet up with the bills. I became more confident and more optimistic as a person and as a professional. I evolved. The network evolved me.

I am not making millions yet in the business but I am a much better person now because of my exposure to the business. My first option which is Real Estate now looks more possible and it is going to be one of my goals for 2021. Now, I still dedicate two hours per day weekdays to my network marketing business but added another two to personal development. And who knows, I may one day start making money from writing also (lol).

My dream lifestyle of traveling around the world, spending more time with my family, watching my kids grow and experiencing their growth along with them, really rendering humanitarian services now looks more achievable.

One thing I know though is that no matter how much money I will make from my Passive income, I will never stop being an Optometrist. Because it is all about making an impact while making an income.
