“Woolhara” by Albert Irvin (1986)

The news is in. Tomorrow’s going to have 72 hours. For one day, Earth is going to become an alien planet and rotate in 72 hours instead of 24. I know, I know…the claim is unbelievable. But the evidence is undeniable.

For one day, we get to have our beauty sleep, sip the wine slowly, and take an extended shower. There will be no sense of urgency in anything we do, be it going to the washroom or taking a cigarette break. Listen to two songs instead of one. Stare at the bird pecking at its wings. Watch the wind play with the chimes. Who cares? You have all the time in the world. 72 hours!

Think about it: you can catch up with that book you’d meant to read. Or answer that email you had to get back to. Maybe take a walk, or meditate like you always promise yourself you will. Pick up the ukulele. Or maybe…you could just sit and do nothing. 72 hours…that’s a lengthy day. Who knows? Maybe now, we can do all that we have left undone, and say all that we left unsaid. But oh, let’s hope that 72 hours are enough…
