Welcoming Tragedy

He was staring at his phone screen for no apparent reason. His mind had reached a state of catatonic despair.

He had a pretty good life. A wife, a beautiful daughter, a son on the way, a pleasant apartment with lovely views, but he was rotting inside with the pressures of his work and the internal turmoil that he let it stoke.

An alert popped up on his phone from a news app that he had installed. Two dead in train crash, it said. He only felt jealousy towards those dead.

That’s when he realised things had gone too far.
