Ciao Silvia!

Such a great sunny day in Milan to start our discussion!

I was thinking about ways to start discussing our project on medium (as always, starting is the hardest :-P)

Since our goal is to publish and sell our first book and we’ve also recently defined necessary steps to achieve it (as of our understanding), I think we could start by working on each steps accordingly.

Therefore, I’ve arrange the discussion topics based on those 5 steps we’ve defined.

So… let’s start!!

1. CONTENT

As we’ve recently discussed togehter, we could start by using a content that is already public (without or expired license) such as the ones found in Project Gutenberg

Doing so, we can leave out the part about dealing with authors and contributors (which I also believe is a big part in the publishing process) and focus more on our goal: to printing and distributing the first edition

We can also slowly define the theme of the publishing house as we continue on developing the project. But for now, it is great to have something to test.

The book I’m interested in is Alice in Wonderland because it is short (not super short, but acceptable), free licensed, well edited, and the story is already well known.

2. EDIT

Finding editors could be hard, and editing them ourselves could be even harder.

But if we choose to go with the open-sourced books (that is also well written+edited), this process can be left off for now and focus more on achieving our goal.

3. DESIGN

As we’ve also discussed, it would be great if we could design a book ourselves since we’re both interested in communication. We could together define the visual of the publishing house, as well as for the books.

In this case, maybe there should be one of us in charge of the visuals as well as identity of the publishing house. This doesn’t mean that one have to do all the design-related materials, but more like a head of design and communication department.

What do you think? If you agree, we can decide later who do this part and who focus more on the other sectors.

4. PRODUCTION

Digital version of the book can be easy since we don’t have to worry about production, materials, and budget.

But physical production could be a big thing. If the goal are to have them printed, then what are the papers? What are the costs? Are there ways (or techniques) to minimize the production budget?

Here, I think there should be one of us start looking in to this throughly (which seems to be more like a management sector).

5. SELL/DISTRIBUTION

The goal of this project is to put on sale the first edition of our book.

Distributing the e-book version could not be so hard (I guess). But if we were to have them printed, how can we contact the shops? What about ISBN? Do we have to establish a company? Is it really feasible within 2 months?

I think here there also should be one of us looking into this throughly also (probably the same one with production because it deals more with management).

Just to wrap up the questions

  1. What do think about each steps?
  2. What do you think about start doing a deeper development: one more into visual identity and another more into the management section? If so, do you have any preferences?

Something extra to see

Below is Alice in Wonderland also on medium, super cool!

Thanks alot! Super excited that this is starting to happen! :-)

See you on Sunday!

For those who were wondering what this discussion is about, you can find out about the project here. :-)
