NDSU has established a local National Academy of Inventors chapter.

The NAI is a member organization made up of U.S. and international universities, governmental and non-profit institutes. They have over 4,000 sole inventor members and fellows that expand more than 250 institutions worldwide. In order to join your university’s or non-profit research institute’s chapter, membership must be attained through your institution’s academic community, in addition to having a patent issued from the USPTO.

Serving NDSU’s NAI chapter are David Grewell, President, Scott Meyer, Vice President, and Michael Kessler, Secretary.

The NDSU NAI chapter received this welcome video from the national president:

Inaugural Cohort of NAI Members in Fargo

As a part of NDSU’s new chapter, the following individuals were nominated to the first class of members:

  • Dean Webster: Department of Coatings and Polymers: 18 patents
  • Val Marinov: Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering: 2 patents
  • Phillip Boudjouk: Department of Chemistry: 6 patents
  • Shane Stafslien: Department of Coatings and Polymers: 4 patents
  • Robert Sailer: Department of Mechanical Engineering: 3 patents
  • Chad Ulven: Department of Mechanical Engineering: 3 patents
  • Raj Bridgelall: Department of Transportation and Logistics: 140 patents
  • Lokesh Naraya: Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering: 1 patent
  • Mukand Sibi: Department of Chemistry: 7 patents
  • Barry Batcheller: Appareo Systems: 31 patents
  • Noel Anderson: John Deere: 118 patents

Grewell, Kessler and Meyer were excited to collaborate on the chapter’s founding as a way to recognize the difficult and expensive work of getting a patent. While this work is not always recognized in the traditional tenure and promotion process, it’s a core part of building an innovative ecosystem at NDSU.

Grewell Nominated to National Academy of Inventors

In addition to being President of the NDSU chapter of NAI, David Grewell was nominated into the National Academy of Inventors. He joins around two dozen other members from around the country.

There will be a ceremony to formally recognize Grewell on April 10, 2020 in Phoenix at the NAI Fellows Induction Ceremony. Grewell specializes in bio-renewable and biodegradable polymers, high-power ultrasonics, micro-fabrication and polymer and metal welding. Grewell has 15 U.S. patents.
