Christmas Eve, 2021. The streets of Surulere were quiet as usual but a few Christmas decorations could be seen adorning the walls around. John and Ayo were on their routine evening walk, patrolling the area for anything interesting. They’d been walking for a while before they finally decided to call it quits and head back home.

On getting to the junction where they would part ways, they discovered a calabash with a huge wad of money placed on top of it and a red napkin used to hold it in place. The streets were darker now and there was no one in sight at the moment.

“A.Y., see money!” screamed John. “Make we take am?”

“E be like say you no know wetin this money be for abi? Na the gods get am. E better make we leave am for there.”

Being the adamant person he was, John was hell-bent on taking the money and the argument dragged on for a while till Ayo eventually backed down.

“I don sha warn you,” said Ayo, after realizing his words fell on deaf ears.

John scanned the area and when he was sure no one was spying on them, he bent to take the money. Immediately he touched it, the unexpected happened. A fully grown cock now stood in the exact spot John did and the calabash disappeared.

Ayo ran as fast as his legs could carry him but the animal chased after him. That’s when the idea struck.

“I been tell you, you no listen. See you now,” Ayo stated as he picked up the bird. “But you know say tomorrow na Bros J birthday and Mama never buy anything for house.

“You no go vex ehn but we go meet for heaven.”

Ayo walked home with a huge smile on his face and a hysterical bird in his hand. Christmas this year was going to be great.
