We are all feeling much less secure. And this will increase as confusion, both inadvertent and intentional, spreads. Because this was a supportive response to Holly Wood’s article I didn’t go beyond her description of capitalism. Dealing with the hysteria requires staying focused on the future and social and intellectual changes that are driving the confusion. The people caught in rapidly disappearing ways of thinking and with an inherent tendency to deny change will be the most confused.

Your discussion of the Old Believers is interesting in this context. I expect that we will see a growing interest in the small groups that have historically opted out. The Old Believers or Old Ritualists of the Russian Orthodoxy are good examples. Obviously the Mennonites are growing in popularity as another form of “traditionalists” although that seems to be a result of the romance genre of fiction. I have to admit that is a rumor as I don’t spend much time in the romance fiction world.

If you follow some of the things I’ve been exploring in history, diversity, and politics, I find self segregation as not only a reality in this country but about the only practical solution to the long historical tail that we are growing that would allow increasingly hysterical groups to retain self government in a very diverse and urban world. It would appear that large nation states are simply not viable in a rapidly changing world based on expanded equality, rights and diversity.
