Followers of Bitcoin already know that during late April of 2022, the African country known as the Central African Republic declared Bitcoin would become legal tender — becoming the second country after El Salvador to do so. The announcement was a surprise, if not puzzling — and remains puzzling still, given the lack of news or meaningful plans which have followed since its initial adoption of the cryptocurrency.

The Central African Republic is a landlocked country bordered by Chad, Sudan, South Sudan, DR Congo, Republic of the Congo, and Cameroon.

Famous for its richness in diamonds, gold, and uranium, it is nevertheless one of the world’s poorest countries with a Gross National Income (GNI) per capita of $510 — slightly ahead of Burundi ($270), Somalia ($310), Mozambique ($460), Madagascar ($480), Sierra Leone ($490), and Afghanistan ($500).

For comparison purposes, India has a GNI per capita of $1,900, Ecuador with $5,530, Spain with $30,330, and the United States with $65,910.
