Benioff — Buddies with Blockchain?

Salesforce, the SF-based company whose namesake tower became the eye of Sauron on Halloween, has cast its eye onto something else: Using Blockchain technology to stop spam in its tracks.

Salesforce recently got a patent to use blockchain technology to detect and prevent spam from getting in customer’s inboxes. The problem right now is that, even with the best spam folders, things still slip through the cracks. One issue with current spam filters is that there can be, or instance, false positives in detection. Spam can still get through!

The way that Salesforce is looking to change this is through using a blockchain. As an immutable ledger, the Salesforce spam blockchain can be used to record all emails that come through the filter — so if, for instance, the Prince of Nigeria wants to tell you about how you can do a ton of things with “one easy trick”, this will be recorded as spam on the Salesforce blockchain, using a matching system. This will enable anyone else who is using this filter to get improved results and cut down on spam.

This isn’t the only foray of Salesforce and its CEO Marc Benioff into the blockchain space: Benioff has been a big supporter of blockchain solutions, outlining his and Salesforce’s desire to produce more blockchain products in a conversation earlier this year. We’ll see whether the interest of big tech companies such as Salesforce in blockchain will lead to more engagement and higher trading volumes down the line, in a less spammy future. Until then, we got to let you know about this limited time offer….
