The outrageously photogenic Winklevoss Twins, one time villains to Mark Zuckerberg and the owners of the Gemini Exchange, are suing an almost as photogenic Charlie Shrem for stealing 5,000 Bitcoins. Shrem, the founder of early crypto exchange BitInstant, went to prison when his customers used their Bitcoins on the Silk Road and Shrem turned a blind eye to it. Yes, that’ll get you behind bars.

Shrem was a business partner of the Winklevii, who invested in BitInstant. Shrem claimed that he went to prison completely penni — -err we mean Bitcoinless. However, since Shrem’s release, he’s been ballin’, buying “multiple Maseratis and powerboats.” According to the lawsuit filing, “Either Shrem has been incredibly lucky and successful since leaving prison, or — more likely — he ‘acquired’ his six properties, two Maseratis, two powerboats and other holdings with the appreciated value of the 5,000 Bitcoin he stole.”

After all, anyone can start over and buy a Maserati in a year — it’s so easy! No idea why Shrem didn’t just get a Lambo — it wouldn’t have been original enough. In any case, the 5,000 Bitcoins that were stolen allegedly by Shrem are now worth over $32 million and were worth multiples more at their peak. We at the Key got our popcorn and are interested to see how this one will play out.
