With over 2.23 billion users worldwide — and over 1 billion active every day — it is perhaps surprising that there aren’t hundreds of Facebook apps for Mac users.

Despite several scandals this year, Facebook remains a popular social media platform. It’s such a normal part of so many people’s lives that short of them starting to charge users, many of us will continue to use Facebook for keeping in contact with people around the world.

Active users, with hundreds of friends or thousands we stay in contact with using Messenger, often use third-party apps when logging into Facebook on our Mac’s. It is more convenient than using a browser every time — most of us have enough tabs open without adding Facebook into the mix. We’ve tried and tested numerous apps and come up with our top 6 for improving the Facebook experience on a Mac.

Top Facebook Apps for Mac

#1: Facebook Messenger

Let’s start with Facebook’s own app, Messenger. With over 1.3 billion monthly active users — in September 2017 — it’s the social networks third most valuable platform, after WhatsApp, but still ahead of Instagram. That figure is only for people who login directly through the Messenger App, on any device, instead of accessing messenger through Facebook.

It is a clean, tidy app that keeps you fully up-to-date with messages, while also giving you all the usual stuff, such as stickers, themes and the ability to make voice and video calls, and send money. All the bells and whistles, basically. But it certainly isn’t the only option, and for Mac users, it’s worth exploring some of the alternatives.

#2: FMenu

FMenu, for example, is a great way to bring Facebook notifications to macOS unobtrusively. Unlike some apps that crave your attention, you can minimize this to ensure that it doesn’t constantly interrupt when you’re trying to work.

You get a lot more control with FMenu, letting you filter or only show important notifications, such as new messages from a limited number of friends, or only comments on certain posts. It also integrates with your Calendar and other features. It has a slick and user-friendly UI, making it a worthwhile contender for space on your desktop.

#3: Current

Current is a macOS Facebook Messenger app with hundreds of positive reviews. It comes with several neat features you won’t find elsewhere, such as the ability to open chats in different windows, to ensure you don’t get mixed up.

Current isn’t free — but at $1.99 it’s worth the investment if you chat a lot on Messenger and want a standalone app to manage all your conversations.

#4: Facebook Messenger for Firefox

Easy to install and control for anyone using Firefox. This simple browser plugin gives you voice and message functions right in your browser. The only downside is that it hasn’t been updated for a while, so there may remain some question how long this app is going to be actively supported.

#5: Bloom

Bloom is a macOS desktop app that is far quicker and more efficient for those who often upload videos and images. For Page managers, for example, you can bypass the slow native Installer function, making it easier for social media managers and anyone who posts a lot of videos and pictures.

The premium version is $15, which as a one-off payment makes it cheaper than subscribing to most social media manager tools. It comes with technical support, with image formats supported customizable up to 2048px in the pro version.

#6: IM+

Do you often find yourself jumping between conversations across multiple platforms?

On macOS, IM+ could be the app for you. Connect Facebook Messenger and any number of other apps — including Slack, Skype, Telegram, Twitter, LinkedIn, Gmail, WhatsApp — into the same messaging app. Keep all in one messenger. Jump easily between conversations and collaborate with others on the most relevant platform for them.

Depending on how many accounts you use, you can add multiple profiles per social platform, even from popular dating apps, such as Tinder. You’ve got the ability to customize notifications and maintain boundaries between work chats and conversations with friends, so you don’t need to worry about getting a message from your boss at 2 am.

IM+ is available as part of Setapp subscription and goes together with a huge set of handy Mac apps. IM+ is a pretty universal messaging app for Mac since it supports multiple accounts and grouping for related ones, allowing you to switch easily between home and work.

All of these Facebook apps for macOS are well worth trying. Make it easier to manage Facebook, stay focused while working, or switch between multiple conversations across a whole range of apps.
