Did you know—that summer tends to be a time of reduced productivity? The hotter it gets, the lower both our attention and energy levels become. Not to worry, the weekend is on its way! And there’s no better time than now to give your brain a well-deserved break by making use of the countless events and activities that are taking place these next few days on the Bay.

Meet an Olympian

Don’t miss your chance this weekend to meet Olympic fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad, the first Muslim American woman to wear a hijab while competing for the United States at the Olympic Games.

Named one of TIME magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World, she serves as a sports ambassador for the U.S. State Department, cofounded Athletes for Impact and the clothing company Louella, and inspired the first hijabi Barbie in her likeness.

In celebration of her new book “Proud,” Muhammad will be giving a talk at Menlo Park’s Kepler’s Books about how she fought back against bigotry and reached success. Get your tickets ASAP!

Keep the kids busy

The Market at Edgewood’s TomatoFest is taking place this Friday and Saturday for two days of delicious samples, BBQ, live music and fun activities such as corn hole, face painting and cookie decorating. And don’t forget to bring your homegrown tomatoes—the family-owned grocery store is buying tomatoes from customers and will be offering them in a “customer tomato medley” available for purchase alongside their usual selection of fresh produce.

Treat your kids to this nano drone workshop at the Hiller Aviation Museum, where they‘ll learn how to fly a tiny, camera-equipped drone using First Person View (FPV) technology. Or take them to test ride the all new Boosted electric skateboards at B8ta in Palo Alto.

If you’d rather keep your day more relaxed, browse the photography, jewelry, paintings and fiber art of local artists at ART on the Square. Alternatively, pack a picnic dinner and wind down with the entire family to see “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” by the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival in Cupertino.

Adults only

Start your weekend off strong with a night of dancing to DJ Vice’s summer hits at Pure Nightclub in Sunnyvale. Or take it easy and attend an Italian wine and food tasting celebration at Donato Enoteca accompanied by live jazz. There will be 100 different wines, including Italy’s best Barolo, Brunello and rosé wines.

Last but not least, celebrate the end of Silicon Valley Beer Week with brews and BBQ at Vino Locale. Check out our guide to other SV Beer Week events here.

Jam out

Music in the Bay is thriving as always, so don’t miss out on these killer weekend concerts. On Friday, tune in to Halsey at the Shoreline Ampitheatre or make your way over to the Stanford Summer Orchestra featuring violin soloist Aditya Chander.

Saturday brings Grammy Award-winning country singer Chris Stapleton’s All American Road Show and the 4th Annual Hello Summer Music Festival.

Wrap things up with a bang on Sunday with rapper G-EAZY or close it out quietly with jazz legend Charles Mcpherson’s quintet.

Get moving

Summer fitness is a breeze when you’re meeting new friends, having fun and learning how to dance Bachata. Same goes for learning how to cross-step waltz.

Alternatively, if dancing isn’t your thing, grab a friend or your SO and head over to this partner yoga workshop, where you’ll learn how asana practices can help you navigate relationships.

One of the best ways to take advantage of the warm, sunny weather this summer is to go on a hike. This photowalk in Skyline Ridge will take you on an easy-paced, five-mile hike where you’ll learn how to take macro photos of lichens. Or explore Rancho San Antonio with the family on a three-mile roundtrip hike where you’ll visit Deer Hollow Farm halfway through the walk and be treated to a tour of the working farm and the animals that live there.
