23 sensational summer events for living it up on the Peninsula this weekend
Soccer, Seal and suds. Plus a barn dance and a fitness expo.
It’s not just you—we’re suffering from PWCD (post-World-Cup-depression) too. But summer continues on with some of the same elements—a huge soccer match, lots of beer and ongoing festivitites. So get off the couch and make the most of the warm weather with some of these many local happenings that we’ve collected here for your summer enjoyment.
Round two
Missed last week’s exciting World Cup festivities? Or maybe you just can’t get enough soccer? Well you won’t want to miss the San Jose Earthquakes playing Manchester United right here in Santa Clara on Sunday, so grab some tickets for some serious soccer excitement.
Last week also marked the date of the San Jose Obon Festival, Japantown’s largest festival of the year. But not to worry if you missed that as well, as Mountain View’s Obon Festival will be taking place this weekend for two days of delicious food, fun games and enriching cultural activities.
Family time
You’ll want to check out Hiller Aviation Museum’s Kids’ Carnival if your children are anywhere near as airplane-obsessed as we were back then. Kids will be able to build paper helicopters, meet a pig in a plane and hang out in the cockpits of Boeing fighter jets.
If arts and crafts are more of your thing, Family Arts Day at Mountain View’s CSMA will be having digital art demonstrations, an instrument “petting zoo” and live performances from their music students. Or meet artist Julia Goodman, who will teach you a creative way to make paper with minimal equipment and maximum fun.
There are two ways to enjoy some theater this weekend: the Los Altos Youth Theatre is performing Little Women as a musical and the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival is coming back to Cupertino this year to put on “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”
Date Night
Las Vegas-based DJ and electronic music producer Justin Blau, also known as 3LAU, is hosting this Friday night (and Saturday morning, if you catch our drift) at Sunnyvale’s Pure Night Club. His latest album, “Ultraviolet,” hit #1 on iTunes’ Electronic Chart.
Something else to anticipate this weekend is the start of Silicon Valley Beer Week. In celebration of the vibrant craft brew culture in the region, many of our local bars, breweries and restaurants will be putting out their best barrels of beer with discounts and specials on the line. Here’s our guide to help you navigate the best deals of the coming week.
Head down to Pescadero and enjoy the Pie Ranch Third Saturday Barn Dance with your significant other. Bring a dish to share for the potluck dinner and then do-si-do away to live country music.
Enjoy the rustic charm of Italy with gourmet food and live music at Vina Enoteca in the beautiful square at Stanford University. San Francisco-based DJ Nino MSK and band Sonamo’ Italian Funk will be playing, so bring your dancing shoes and get ready for a night of fun.
Jam out
Choose wisely, because two concerts will be held every day this weekend on the Peninsula. On Friday, Santana tribute band Caravanserai will be playing in Redwood City while Classic Albums Live will be recreating Fleetwood Mac’s album “Rumours” on the lawn of Stanford University on Saturday and Creedence Clearwater Revival’s album “Chronicle Volume 1” on Sunday.
For more classical and less rock, the Redwood Symphony will be rounding out their 33rd season with a special presentation of music from popular Broadway hits such as My Fair Lady, The King and I, and Cinderella.
The Mountain Winery in Saratoga has some good concerts this weekend, with Seal and Melissa Etheridge on Thursday and Sunday, respectively.
Last but not least, Sunday brings a choice between a classical performance by Opera San José and a lively concert by The Cocktail Monkeys.
Get moving
TheFitExpo is back to San Jose this year with fitness competitions, fashion shows and celebrity athlete appearances. And it’s not just for professional body builders—the convention also features cooking demonstrations and recipe makeovers for those more interested in the health side of the expo.
Get your summer cardio back in check and join Fleet Feet Menlo Park for their free Summerfest 5K Fun Run and Walk. Participate in the family-friendly run that’s open to all paces and enjoy snow cones and prizes at the finish line.
For you fitness nuts out there, test both your physical and mental capabilities at the GORUCK Tough Challenge. In 10 to 12 hours you’ll cover 15 to 20 miles and learn the history behind the Operation Red Wings mission. Alternatively, take a stab at their Light Challenge, which covers seven to 10 miles in four to five hours. 20% of registration fees will be donated to the Navy SEAL Foundation.
