Coffee With Craft
For the past two years, I have hosted a podcast called Coffee With Craft, its all about having an intentional conversation like you would with a friend over coffee. During the first few months of the quarantine, I have been putting in the hard work to get the podcast ready for the relaunch. With the relaunch, I wanted to make sure that my podcast got as many eyes on it as possible and so I decided to go ahead and run a Facebook ad for my podcast for the first time.
I’ve always been a little skeptical of Facebook ads and using them to grow my platform. There is a large part of me that feels like its cheating in some way. That I am neglecting the hard work and grit it takes to build your personal brand and to grow your influence. However after several conversations with others and a couple of Gary Vee videos later I went ahead and ran a twenty-dollar Facebook ad.
The results were insane.
Before the ad had run on Facebook my podcast got around 30–40 listens per episode in the first week of its life. Normally I see this gradually go up as people who don’t listen on launch day or find it randomly at some point in the next few weeks and I see the analytics jump up to the 60–100 range.
At the time of writing this on audio platforms, the episode I boosted is rocking 33 listens and is on track to hit 40 by the end of the week. On Youtube however where I directed the Facebook ad is a different story.
In my first week of the relaunch, I did not run a Facebook ad, and the podcast episode I released got around 17 views on Youtube.
Before I ran the Facebook ad my small youtube channel of 20 subscribers only had 2 hours of total watch time between all of my videos. Now, thanks to the add that I ran on this week's episode I have 7 hours of watch time.
Less than one week into the episode's life span on what platform alone I have done better than most of my episodes usually do. I am blown away by the results of this!
Facebook ads really work.
What I did poorly
Not everything was perfect, however. Despite the increase in viewership, watch hours, and overall awareness for the podcast I didn’t gain a single subscriber from running the ad for my youtube channel. Therefore I am unsure if I have earned any new listeners who will join me for conversation next week. Time will tell if my youtube videos start to steadily gain traction from that.
Since running my ad as well I have been watching video after video about running targeted Facebook ads and realized that I set up my reach way too broad and that I could have done a lot more to really target my specific audience.
I also realize that I could have gotten more clicks if I had created a stronger copy for the post that I was creating. As someone who has never run ads before this is something, I have been learning in those videos that I have been watching. For me to use ads to continue to grow my podcast I need to get more specific and not just target a broad group of individuals.
Have you ever run Facebook ads before? What worked for you? Would love to hear how I could do better for the next ad I run!
