Rikers Island
Rikers Island is a jail in New York. This jail is famously known for the abuse that goes on in the inside. In a letter from the United States Attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York, the attorney’s office reports that they looked into the treatment of adolescent male inmates between the ages of sixteen through eighteen. The letter also goes on to highlight that “…we find that adolescent inmates at Rikers are not adequately protected from harm, including serious physical harm from the rampant use of unnecessary and excessive force by DOC staff.”
Which is ridiculous. We should still be protecting our children, even in prisons, and not expose them to the violence and make sure they aren’t harmed. Medical professionals at the jail shared records with the attorney’s office and showed that as a result of excessive force and inmate violence, adolescents have sustained serious injuries, such as broken jaws, broken orbital bones, broken noses, lacerations, etc.”
