Tadao Ando is a famous Japanese architect. He is known for designing and constructing a wide variety of incredible structures. From the beautiful Church of Light to the fascinating Rokko Housing, he has quite the pedigree.
In a 2009 book by Jin Baek, Tadao Ando is famous for saying: “We do not need to differentiate one from the other. Dwelling in a house is not only a functional issue, but also a spiritual one. The house is the locus of heart (kokoro), and the heart is the locus of god. Dwelling in a house is a search for the heart (kokoro) as the locus of god, just as one goes to church to search for god. An important role of the church is to enhance this sense of the spiritual. In a spiritual place, people find peace in their heart (kokoro), as in their homeland.”
By living in a house we search for the heart; we search for god. For Ando we find god within the home. It is a fascinating interpretation of an aspect of almost all of us as humans that we rarely consider, i.e. the nature of the home. It is a profound and poignant interpretation of the home that gives us a lot to think about.
