Going Rogue: a Cynical Love Letter to ‘Rogue One’
On cynicism, sacrifice, and homage
“this game is…dedicated to anti-fascist organizers everywhere, who put their own lives on the line — often anonymously — to keep us safe. your work is neither unseen or unappreciated.”
— Going Rogue 2e, page 2
The official Star Wars roleplaying game is basically dead. No new material has been published in years, although the current license holder — Edge Studios — dribbles out updates that go nowhere every so often. Meanwhile, Star Trek Adventures just got a 2nd edition, and the previous edition covered a fair amount of “New Trek”.
But even if the game was in production, the ruleset would still be outdated and clunky by modern standards. And even in its heyday, it just didn’t quite FEEL like Star Wars.
But there are a number of indie TTRPGs inspired by Star Wars. Most concern themselves purely with the pew-pew of it all, but games like Galactic — now in its second edition — take the franchise more seriously. And Going Rogue, a third party expansion, explores the heavier aspects of resisting fascism.
